Occupation/Rank Prisoner

Demonic Essence Alarran was born from and draws power from the essence of Ambition. He is related to 'Pride' demons, with one of the territorial kings leading their kind being the dominating force on the Abyssal plane in the area Alarran had called 'home.' He is wary of the overlap and is himself an aberration; choosing to draw power from mortals who pursue their goals and dreams in a clean, honorable way. If asked, he struggles to explain the distinction - only that some mortal aspirations and dogged determination to succeed 'taste' better. He has a sincere fondness for creators of all types and recharges best when in the presence of them.

*Powers Note* His powers are locked due to layers of spells laid on him at summoning, but the nature of the Material World works against him as well. His presence in a human body without possessing it alongside the host's soul goes against his demonic nature and that of the human body itself. He struggles to recharge his essence/magic in the early days and is extremely weak as a result. Over time, he learns to adapt in order to stay alive but cannot use magic for a long time. Contact with beings from the Empyreal Plane range from mildly uneasy/uncomfortable to outright painful/damaging depending on the type and duration of contact.

*Summoning Note* His possession of Tavaras's body is absolute; Tas' soul vanished completely from the Material World when the ritual finished, leaving Alarran in sole control of the body left behind. Alarran is unsure whether his hosts' soul is 'dead' - though he tends to believe it is. Alarran was snatched from Abyssal against his will and asserts that he did not accept the soul as a prize for answering the summoning; despite what the Brotherhood says. Privately, he wonders if his hosts' soul is wandering Abyssal as a disembodied spirit.

Normal demonic possession entails the demon essence and host's soul cohabitating the body. With the absence of the host soul, Alarran is effectively the body's 'owner' and he cannot be exorcised by normal means.

Appearance

Eyes Change depending on mood/health: Yellow, Orange, Red, Muddy Brown, Black.
Hair Deep, wavy brown kept in a messy braid often tossed over his shoulder or left hanging down his back
Height 5' 11"
Build Lithe and athletic, very fit
Description Alarran's human body belonged to a young Karsite Sunpriest mage-apprentice of some skill and social influence. The body is handsome by human standards, with warm sun-kissed skin and an otherworldly bronze sheen to it. The demon inside changed little about his host, with only a slight elongation of his sharp canines, a subtle point to his ears and color-changing eyes betraying his Abyssal nature. The body was maintained impeccably prior to being used as a summoning vessel, though Alarran himself finds it weak and prone to injury.

As a fully fledged demon, Alarran's natural body stands at an even seven feet of sculptured muscle and sinew, his head crowned by a set of swept back obsidian horns and slender, tapered ears. His shape is surprisingly human and elegant for a demon, his frame solid and strong without being heavy or ponderous. Leathery wings with a layer of black-iron tipped feathers sprout from his back along with a long, whiplike tail with a sharp, black-iron barb on the end. His native skin is a deep, metallic coppery-bronze with black iron talons tipping each finger and toe. Small obsidian scales freckle his skin and wings. He keeps his wild dark brown hair tied back out of his face; the length of it exuding confidence in a environment known for violence and ambush. When in command of his native form and full power, Alarran's eyes are a rich sun-like gold that shifts into crimson when enraged or using his inherent magic.

Most notable about his demon-form are his black tattoos. The intricate designs travel the length of his body from his right shoulder, down his side and ending mid-thigh. Each was carved into his skin by his own magic as a 'shorthand' summoning for his most-used spells. In his new human body, the designs will only flicker across his skin when using his demon magic.

Personality

Virtues Curious, Honorable, Loyal, Dynamic, Confident, Disciplined
Flaws Fierce, Resolute, Merciless, Mischievous, Vain, Assertive
Description
Curious - Dark and dangerous may be the first descriptive words to come to mind when analyzing Alarran; but an equally valid description is his unrelenting thirst for knowledge. To say he is simply curious is an understatement; he wants to know how things work, why they were made, who made them, what processes were used, how do those work? And that's just the tip of the iceberg. The material world is a wealth of unknowns to this former immortal, and he's itching to absorb everything he can while he's here. Perhaps he's less interested in emotions and social games, but that doesn't mean he avoids or dismisses them - he's curious about that too! Those just ... hurt a little.

Quick - Surviving to 'adulthood' on the Abyssal Plane takes a lot more than fast reflexes and

Intense - There is an intensity about Alarran that cannot be chalked up to the simple explanation of 'he's a demon.' Were that true, any demon could rise to the same level of power and command that Alarran possesses in spades. No, the demon's intensity comes from something else - some deep seated drive to reach farther, run faster, seek more knowledge and above all else: keep moving. Alarran would rather cease to exist then stagnate, and it is this core trait that defines him as a force to be reckoned with among his kith and kin. His merciless claws have and will kill those who stand in his way in the same manner that he uses his magic to sweep aside obstacles. He does not revel in brutality, but it is as much a part of his nature as his curiosity.

Proud - Savage intensity only goes so far, however. Alarran isn't an animal, thank you, and he is nothing if not an impressively vain creature. Being related to the 'Pride' class of demons comes with a few pitfalls, chief of which is an almost insufferable arrogance. Alarran accepts that about himself, even if he dislikes the relation to those 'lesser' demons of the Pride class. He wears his confidence like a shroud, enveloping his steely nerves and frigid assessment of the world in a cloak of calm disinterest. If he seems unflappable, that is only somewhat true - he has surprisingly thin skin and does not tolerate insults well. His temper burns brightly and quickly - though he seldom indulges in grudges or revenge.

Otherworldly - Alarran does not play by the same rules as humans. His world is one of violence and the never-ending struggle for survival, meaning he puts himself and his goals ahead of everyone and everything. Exposure to human culture, morality and the concept of loyalty to allies has changed him in some ways, but not when it comes to the crucial difference between those of the Empyrean Plane and the Abyssal. Alarran will not sacrifice himself for others. He will bleed for them, he will struggle for them, he will endure pain for them - but he will not die for them. Demons have only one shot at existence - they cannot be reborn nor will they reach a higher state of being if found to have served the Empyrean deities selflessly. Alarran is more aware of this than most, and he is both bitter about it and energized by it. Where other demons care little for the Empyrean or seek to destroy it, he lives each moment like it is his last - because for all he knows, it could be. Time will tell if that remains the case.

Family & History

Parents None; Chaos Itself?
Siblings Many; All Demons
Noble Family None; Demons hold Ranks, but they are not traced by lineage. Alarran is ranked as a 2nd tier demon, just below the ruling territory 'kings' such as Alloces and the Blue Demon. There are 20 ranks in total.

Timeline
  • Beginning of time/mortal plane existence: Alarran comes into existence along with other demons; feeding on the material world and growing stronger. He has no concept of 'time' - only that he hasn't achieved what he wants most. This feeling drives him onward until he is a demon of the 2nd Rank; and a very real threat to the 1st Rank demon in 'his' territory; Alloces the Red Demon.
  • During a fight with Alloces, unknown summoning magic snares them both. Alloces rips free but Alarran isn't so lucky - he 'wakes' with senses dulled and his power and magic sealed away from him. Trapped in a feeble human body, he realizes with a completely new sensation (dread) that he has no way to break out of the prison he has found himself in.
  • The Brotherhood of Red Flame sacrificed one of their promising young apprentices to summon a demon - but not just any demon. They wanted the strongest demon they could catch, and they wanted to trap it inside the body and mind of one of their own. The summoning backfired, killing the host's soul and leaving the demon in control. The summoners acted fast, layering spell after spell on the body to prevent a full possession - but not fast enough to seal Alarran's will.
  • The situation evolves over a period of months into one where Alarran realizes the mages got far more then they bargained for - he's essentially become a living conduit into the Abyssal for them. A source of power and strength that he is unable to access himself, but that they forcibly take from from him. Daily. His human body cannot handle the pain, and soon... neither can he.
  • Weakening into a shadow of himself, Alarran awaits death ... confined to a small magic circle in the basement of a temple somewhere in Haven's slums.
